Fylde Budokai - Shinto Muso Ryu Jodo & Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu Iaido

At Fylde Budokai we practice a Koryu or “Ancient School” with a history going back some 400 years.

Shinto Muso Ryu Jodo is a traditional martial school from Japan and employs a short staff or Jo . Jodo comprises of kata practiced in pairs, one person using a Sword ( Uchidachi ) and another using the Jo ( Shidachi ).

The original art created by Muso Gonnosuke has evolved and been added to from its inception until modern times. The art was successfully brought outside of its original domain in Fukuoka and outside of Japan itself in the 19th and 20th century. The spreading of Shinto Muso-ryu beyond Japan was largely the effort of Shimizu Takaji considered the 25th headmaster of the SMR lineage.

Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu Iaido (“Peerless, Direct transmission, Eishin school”).

Fylde Budokai is associated with Eikoku Roshukai the British branch of Roshukai, a Japanese school headed by Iwata Norikazu sensei. It is dedicated to the teachings of Oe Masamichi (1852 - 1927). Oe sensei was the 17th headmaster of the MJER.

Iaido often described as “The way of drawing the sword” is more accurately translated as “Path of mental presence and immediate reaction”. Or, to be always ready for any eventuality.
